  3. To gain access to any of the network OPACS, telnet to any one of the
  4. following university library computers:

  16. The username to use is ALEPH.  No password is required.

  18. You will be greeted with a Terminal Selection menu which is rather
  19. complicated.  Below is a sample menu, followed by some pointers and
  20. suggestions.

  43. Pointers and Suggestions:
  44. ------------------------
  45. 1. Generally speaking, try terminal types 2, 5, or 11.
  46.    They will enable you to search in English and other
  47.    Latin alphabets (French, Spanish, transliterated Cyrillic, etc.)
  48.    If you are accessing the system via TN3270 choose terminal type 5.
  49.  
  50. 2. Hebrew and other soft fonts:
  51.    ALEPH supports soft font alphabets (Hebrew, Cyrillic, Arabic, Greek, etc.).
  52.  
  53.    For users from abroad the soft font terminal types are 17, 18, or 19.
  54.    You must have a VT320 or VT420 or Visual 603 terminal/emulation to display
  55.    these fonts.

  57.    A great deal of material has ben cataloged in Hebrew, and
  58.    a lesser amount in Arabic.  Cyrillic cataloging has only just
  59.    begun.  Some Arabic records have been cataloged in transliterated
  60.    Hebrew, and some Cyrillic records have been cataloged in
  61.    transliterated English.  Consult each OPAC for specific details.

  63. Suggestions for Israeli Internet Users:
  64. --------------------------------------
  65. 1. If you are interested in Hebrew, and own a pc bought in Israel,
  66.    use the Hebrew Kermit program (HKermit), written at Hebrew
  67.    University, to connect to ALEPH.  You should be using a vt100
  68.    emulation, and your pc must have an EGA card.

  76.    set file type binary
  77.    get mskermit.ini
  78.  
  79.    Please note that the file is an initialization file. It is recommended
  80.    that you create a separate directory in which you keep a copy of your
  81.    mskermit.exe and the special mskermit.ini. Use this directory for
  82.    accessing ALEPH.  Choose terminal type 3 when you use Hebrew Kermit.

  84. 2. If you have a VT220 protocol terminal with a standard Hebrew chip
  85.    using standard Hebrew ASCII mapping you can display Hebrew. The
  86.    Hebrew used is DEC 8-bit ASCII.  Choose terminal type 11.

  88. 3. Terminal types 1 and 4 have a Hebrew chip specially adapted and
  89.    only available in Israel.
  90.  
  91. 4. Hebrew and Other Soft Fonts:
  92.    If you have a VT320 or VT420 or Visual 603 with a Hebrew chip,
  93.    use terminal types 27, 28, and 29 to display Hebrew and other
  94.    soft font alphabets.

  99. Once inside ALEPH, you will generally see a Main Menu Screen from which
  100. you can begin to search the online catalog. Instructions are available
  101. in Hebrew and English. To change from one language to another type a
  102. question mark "?".
  103.  
  104. Use the LB command to switch from one library OPAC to another, all the
  105. while maintaining your ALEPH session.  The switch will be transparent to
  106. you.  At times a library might be inaccessible. This is generally at
  107. night, when maintenance jobs are running that lock certain files.  If
  108. this happens switch to another library in the network.
  109.  
  110. To exit Aleph type STOP.
  111.
